Design by Jonathan Muecke, 2025
The Muecke Wood Chair is a striking exploration of form, material, and structure—crafted entirely from solid wood and defined by its signature joinery of intersecting rounded dowels. Its design is as much about the logic of construction as it is about visual clarity. Every element shows itself, and every connection reveals a clear intention, making the chair as intellectually engaging as it is comfortable.
This approach stems from the mind of Jonathan Muecke, an architect and sculptor known for treating material not just as a medium, but as a subject. “I don’t think about chairs as objects,” he says. “I think about a chair in terms of material—as a marker of human scale, a physical record in relational space.”
In his first collaboration with Knoll, Muecke brings his sculptural thinking into everyday life, transforming the familiar into something quietly radical. The chair’s curved plywood seat and backrest offer warmth and support, while the distinct floating tenon joints—where rounded wooden dowels overlap and connect—create both a structural and visual rhythm. Nothing is hidden. Every detail invites the user to understand the piece of wood again and again.
